Impact
The Declaration of Independence has made a major impact on society, and started a chain of events that would particularly later effect women and slaves. When the Declaration of Independence was first written it “declared all men be free and equal – except black men who were to be neither free nor equal.” In the beginning, when the Declaration of Independence was first adopted, it was “to apply only to the white men.” Benjamin Curtis contested the Declaration of Independence and argued that in many states free “Negros” were considered citizens and could vote. It is believed that this document could have started the chain reaction of the civil war and later the passing of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendment which gave freedom and equality regardless “of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”
For over 225 years, women fought for equality and insisted that the term “men” also includes women. They believed that women should have the same natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and also be entitled to vote. Women turned to the Declaration of Independence for justification of their rights. Women’s roles have come a long way from the past which revolved around the household wheretheir time was consumed by taking care of the household, and raising children, with little time for leisure. The Declaration of Sentiments was written to include a list of womens' grievances which was later adopted by the convention. The Declaration of Independence had a significant influence on history as it lead to equality for women. In the past, women could not serve on juries, vote, hold public office or other civic responsibilities. This is a big change from today’s society and this is mainly due to the adoption of The Declaration of Independence which led to this American revolution were women finally won the fight to be “equal”. It was women persistence that “men” was a generic term and meant to include women as well.
